Greatland NAVHDA

Promoting versatile hunting dogs

in Alaska

Alaska Chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association

Benefits of Greatland Chapter Membership:

Camaraderie with other VHD owners:  The Chapter offers every member the opportunity to share training and testing experience with other owners of the same or similar breeds, advice on training techniques, assistance with problem dogs (or dogs with owner problems), and advice on the selection of VHD breeds.

NAVHDA-sanctioned Test opportunities in Alaska: Until the formation of the Greatland NAVHDA Chapter in 2004, VHD owners in Alaska had to travel to the Lower48 to enter their dogs in NAVHDA Tests. Those Tests are now available to members throughout the state, and to VHD owners who want to include a trip to our great state with an opportunity to participate in one of our NAVHDA-sanctioned tests.

Judge Development: Members of the Greatland Chapter now have the opportunity to begin a Judge apprenticeship and continue accumulating training and experience toward designation as a NAVHDA judge.

Breed exposure and advice: Greatland Chapter members own a wide variety of versatile hunting dog breeds. For those who are considering acquiring a VHD for the first time, or who are considering a breed other than one currently owned, Chapter members are readily available to offer personal observations from their training, testing and hunting experience. That advice should be valuable first hand information for the prospective new owner. Even more importantly, the opportunity exists to watch these dogs in the field to help with decision on whether a specific breed is right for your interests.

Clinics and mock tests: The Greatland Chapter offers several training sessions, Handler Clinics and mock tests during the year for the benefit of members who are training pups or working toward a formal NAVHDA-sanctioned Test.

Hunting opportunities: Members of the Greatland Chapter include several Alaska-licensed hunting guides, experienced hunters and others interested in sharing time in the field hunting upland birds and waterfowl with other VHD owners and their dogs.

Youth encouragement: Members of the Greatland Chapter encourage the participation by our junior members in dog training and handling, and in gaining a better understanding of the value of using well-trained hunting dogs in the pursuit of game in Alaska. Youngsters are offered a reduced rate membership and can expect to see training and handling events tailored specifically to our young members.
